Pen-drives online: Transcend, Sandisk or Strontium at $9 (Rs. 499 approx)

During a train stop on way to Guwahati in India once, a "high-tech" gadget peddler peddling “latest technology” to travelers boarded our compartment – his cart was full of pen drives and even a number of data cables. His best-selling product happened to be a – hold your gasp – a “40GB” USB flash drive!

The flash drive’s price the seller cited? Rs. 50 ($ 0.90 approximately)!
My girlfriend was beyond curious: A “40GB” pen drive that costs barely $1? And how on earth did anyone manage to create a “40GB” pen drive? And when? And would you trust that thing?

Anyhow, bitten by curiosity, my girlfriend went ahead and bought the “latest technology” guy’s pen drive.

Sure enough, once she plugged it into her laptop she got a nice little pop-up that said: “Unrecognized device.” She couldn’t even click open the disk. In fact, her laptop promptly hung up before a warning about possible damage from the "unrecognized devise" started popping up. Man. so much affordable technology.

Moral of the story? Chinese goods are still fakes even if they come with “Made in USA” and “Only Processed in China but Made in Japan” tags!

Flipkart’s Latest pen drive deal

India’s top online gadget and gizmo store Flipkart is selling some good stuff. The online store latest product deal is 16GB pen drives for as cheap as Rs. 499 ($ 9 approximately). And no they are not Chinese goods – the 16 GB range pen drive deal which Flipkart is offering are from PC tech leaders like Transcend, Strontium (see image below) and another giant, Sandisk. I bought them for about Rs. 900 ($ 16 dollars approximately) for each, two years ago.

Rs. 499 is a really good deal I say. In fact, it’s a takeaway. I mean I’d rather get a 16 GB Sandisk flash than a 32GB Sandisk for the simple reason of price – I don’t have a need for big storage of 32GB, at least not at present anyway.

The only problem about the deal: Flipkart doesn’t ship to foreign countries and takes orders only from domestic (India) customers. Anyhow, I have been using Transcend (a 4GB) for many years but my work is demanding a bigger room to store my files. So I went ahead and ordered a Transcend and A SanDisk Cruzer Blade for Rs. 499 each. The bonus? Shipping is free.

You can go and check out www.flipkart.com for more other deals aside from pen drives.

Apple MacBook Pro 2012: Retina Display, Big-specs, affordable and top-notch product

I love Apple’s new MacBook Pro, 2012, for some of the specs it offers particularly the totally awesome PPI – the Retina Display is probably the biggest we have come across so far – not mentioning what the previous MacBook Pros offered.   The PPI specs: The new MacBook Pro display measures 15.4 inches across and well – hold your breath – a 2,880x1, 800-pixel resolution with 220 pixels per inch. That’s awesomeness of 5,184,000 pixels! Apple has launched its all new 15.4 inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display at a starting price of US $ 2,755 (UK price: GBP 1,753 and India Price: Rs.1, 52, 900). If you go through the features the new MacBook offers I think the price is okay although for India and US, it asks a bit hefty more considering the 14-inch MacBook. The new Pro uses IPS technology. The DVD drive is no more there – which explains the slim 0.7 inches and barely 2 kg weight.   Here are some of the specs:  The 15-inch MacBook Pro 2.3GHz or 2.5 GHz quad-core I...

PC Monitor "review": My Samsung SyncMaster 793s

In a world of Plasmas, LCDs, “extreme slims” and even what a friend informed me is a “TV-cum-computer” in the market now, my bulky, trusty, old, battle-wearied Samsung SyncMaster 793s remains my best, unfailing and irascibly reliable friend. No I’m not a techie but I have used other snazzy monitors but my SyncMaster -Black 17" is the one and the only workhorse I return to every hour after sashaying with the latest beauties. The latest monitors are well, quite high on the ‘fi’ department but what is more valuable than what you already have and value? I’m a sentimental fool – but a practical one!     Let me tell you about her. Comparing with the recent models, my Samsung SyncMaster 793s is a 17-inch CRT monitor must seem like an old coot time forgot to take along. But trust me, she doesn’t even care – she is more worried that her service might fail me!  If there is anything out there to compare with her, maybe they’d be much better, or even the best, I say. But there...
